Be sure to inspect your basements for drafts during the winter months; wind chills can drop quickly, and it only takes a few seconds for water pipes to freeze.
 

If you own a vacant house, confirm that the heating system is working or the water lines are properly winterized, so you won't be surprised by a large water bill in the spring.
 

Additionally, check that any heat tape you use is installed correctly to prevent fire hazards.
